The last seven days have yielded one of the most powerful displays of leadership that I have ever witnessed. Even if you are not a sports fan, you have likely heard the recent saga of University of Arkansas Football Coach Bobby Petrino. While  there are undoubtedly critical lessons we need to learn from Coach Petrino’s story, the REAL leadership story is found in University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long.

This is a story of a leader who found himself in what most people described as a “no-win” situation. Jeff Long had an employee on his team who was an incredible performer. He had achieved almost superstar status from his “customers”. Revenue was at an all-time high largely due to this employee.  The national buzz was off the charts and the future looked even brighter than the past. This is a story that  we often see in the marketplace, isn’t it? As the leader, what do you do?  The only thing riding on the decision is the psyche of a state, a potential national championship and the near-term future of the University of Arkansas.

A good case could be made for forgiveness with discipline. Let’s keep the train on the tracks. Let’s do what most other leaders do. Let’s do what the “world” tells us to do. That is NOT what Jeff Long chose to do.

I have included the full press conference here. If you haven’t seen it, please take time to watch it. You will be amazed. If you have seen it, I encourage you to watch it again. But this time, watch it with your leadership eyes. Go to school on what you see here from a courageous leader.

Here’s a sampling of the leadership lessons I learned:

  1. Integrity - Doing the right thing, is never the wrong thing.
  2. Wisdom and Courage - have the wisdom to know what to do, and the courage to do it.
  3. Compassion - his heart is deeply connected to the mission. He hurt for everyone who lost in this situation (especially the players).
  4. Details - a great leader is willing to understand and execute.
  5. Decisiveness - his assuredness created a persuasive confidence in the masses.
  6. Vision - communicating the future state with confidence creates emotion and commitment.
  7. Choices - as leaders we face them everyday. Are we willing to do the right thing no matter what the outcome?
  8. Excuses – it was never about Jeff Long. You can only imagine the turmoil he went through.
  9. Passion - do we really care about the mission and purpose of our work?
  10. Influence - last…our work is a platform for influence. Jeff Long made the hard choice. The by-product is an impact in thousands of peoples lives that you can have honor and integrity.
Thanks Jeff…for giving us hope. For allowing your life at work to be a bright light for the rest of us.

Influence is the pillar we are focused on this month.  Spencer Frazier, SVP for Sales at J.B. Hunt brought a powerful message to our Eight to Five gathering last Friday.  He continues his teaching in our blog for the month of December.

Workmatters first pillar of faith at work is Relationship…abiding with God at work.  Everything starts there doesn’t it?

Last week we discussed the pillar Influence.  One of the keys to how we influence others is to choose to let God influence us first.  We need to lean into our Relationship with Him.  But how do we do that at work, specifically if we are faced with a challenging situation and we are just not sure what to do?

Listening to Andy Stanley the other day gave me some insight.  He said following the crowd may be easy, but their noise may filter the reality or voice of God.  Instead, he said to seek God’s influence or to hear God speaking to us, we should listen to our most trusted advisors.  Each of us have a small group of people we are plugged into for advice.  If they are aligned with God, we can Trust we will be influenced by the right voices and their light can help guide us to make the right decision.

The Message version of Proverbs 16:13 says… Good leaders cultivate honest speech; they love advisors who tell them the truth.

Their influence matters.

C.S Lewis writes that “To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.”  He goes on to say that ” To forgive the incessant provocations of daily life—to keep on forgiving the bullying husband, the nagging wife, the selfish daughter or the deceitful son—how can we do it? Only, I think, by remembering where we stand, by meaning our words when we say in our prayers each night “Forgive us our trespasses and we forgive those that trespass against us.”  We are offered forgiveness on no other terms.  To refuse it is to refuse God’s mercy for ourselves.  There is no hint of exceptions and God means what he says.

Our workplaces are rampant with opportunities for forgiveness.  Who has not been wronged in one way or another at work?  Are you still holding on to it and refusing to forgive?  A buddy at work told me more than once that “Forgiveness is liberating.” and he was so right.  Please don’t start this new year holding something against someone at work.  I don’t have to think longer than a couple of seconds about mistakes I have made that needed someone else’s forgiveness.  I know this can be very hard, but we must forgive each other, without limits, as our Father has forgiven us, especially those who are our brother and sisters in Christ.  There is tremendous joy for those who continuously offer forgiveness, who recall what unlimited mercy has been poured out on us through Jesus Christ and who show the same mercy toward others.

Before you pray today, spend some time thinking about who do you need to forgive at work.  Don’t let this year start chained in the dark dungeon of bitterness and miss the blessing of joy when you have truly forgiven.  Let it go!

Friends,

Consider these words of the apostle Paul from his first letter to Timothy:

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people.  Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.  Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.  This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.  For their is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Jesus Christ.  He gave his life  to purchase freedom for everyone.  This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time.  And I have been chosen as a preacher and apostle to teach the Gentiles this message about faith and truth.  I’m not exaggerating—just telling the truth.

And in every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.”  (I Tim 2: 1-8)

The NKJV translation of verse 8 reads ” I desire therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.”

As you read this over, think about it in the context of your workplace. Think about how our work life would be transformed if all believers began to intentionally pray for our work using the message from Paul above as a guide.

As you think about your plans for  2011, consider the teaching of Paul when he instructs Timothy that the first thing he wants him to do is pray.

Have a blessed day!

Former Razorback McFadden Breaks 1,000-Yard Mark, Begins Proving Worth

This headline showed up today in my  inbox today.   Although on one hand I was pleased McFadden was representing the Razorbacks well,  I was also distraught that it would appear his overall worth is being judged by his performance at work.   I know, I know….he is making the big bucks so this  somehow gives us the right to make observations and statements like this.   Don’t think so.

This kind of thought process is becoming more and more evident everywhere we look.  We are made to feel that OUR WORTH is valued based on how we perform, especially at work.  Granted we don’t have to see it in headlines for the whole world to see on the www, but in our own little corner of the planet, these kinds of statements and judgments can be just as damaging.   How would you feel if you saw trumpeted on the company newsletter, “Smathers  begins to prove his worth  after he finally landed the Wham-O account following three years of not measuring up.” What a humiliating thing to have said about you!   I’m so thankful the One in whose eyes our worth really matters is not saying, “Bates finally gets his act together and has performed enough good deeds to maybe begin being worth what I paid for him.”

Would you pray today that you  not contribute to this ridiculous perspective by making or even thinking these kinds of judgment statements of worth about people?  Make every effort to see the people you are responsible for or work with in the same light as our Father sees us.

Thank You Lord for the grace you have provided in that when I don’t measure up, you don’t judge me unworthy of being your child.  Help us to not make these kinds of value statements  about others based on how well they did or did not measure up today, but to understand that their true value lies in things much more important than what I think.  Amen.

Blessings!

60 Days…Special Prayer

Sam Bates, our friend and coworker at WorkMatters, who has been faithfully writing to you during this 60 Days of Prayer, needs prayer! Without going into detail, Sam’s Father has had three separate significant health failings in the last three weeks, the latest of which is a major hip break two days ago. Sam is on site in Ohio. If you would like to send him an encouraging word, click here sbates@workmatters.org.

As we have all joined in prayer for bridging the gap between our faith and work the last few weeks, let’s take this day to lift up Sam and his Dad. Pray for healing, excellent doctors/nurses, wisdom, perseverance, and finally, to trust God.

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

David

I was shocked to find myself in the CEO’s office that afternoon.  One of my “trusted” co-workers had apparently gone to HR and inquired about his options resulting from a conversation we had late one Friday afternoon.  He was a total non-believer and we were having one of those talks about what we were doing this weekend.  Our conversation took a spiritual turn as he shared what inspires him from nature.  I thought this was an opening to state my belief in where the beauty of nature originated. Knowing he was not a believer and that I had to be very thoughtful with this this sort of discussion in our workplace, I proceeded cautiously.  He did not seem offended or put off in any way, but he still felt the need to inform HR what had happened.  HR had to notify our CEO, so there I was.  Our versions of the conversation were different on a couple of key points.

Our enemy has set many land mines in the marketplace.  He does not want us to have any sort of success in this battlefield he seems to have claimed as his territory.  We must continually proceed in a thoughtful and prayerful way as we let our light shine in our workplaces.

Please pray for openings, opportunities and courage to have that conversation with the person God has placed on your heart at work.  Be wise however and know that there will most likely be opposition

Don’t forget what Jesus said as well in matters such as this.  “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.”  Matt 5:11

Blessings!

As we go through these 60 Days of Prayer together, please allow me on occasion, to share some powerful teachings on Prayer that have impacted me over the years.

From C.S. Lewis in  ”The Efficacy of Prayer”

There are, no doubt, passages in the New Testament which may seem at first to sight to promise an invariable granting of our prayers.  But that cannot be what they really mean.  For in the very heart of the story we meet a glaring instance to the contrary.  In Gethsemane the holiest of all petitioners prayed three times that a certain cup might pass from Him.  It did not.  After that, the idea that prayer is recommended to us as a sort of infallible gimmick may be dismissed.

Enjoy this Lord’s Day as you worship our Creator with your families!

Sam

I’m sure you never experience office politics. So, you can just move on to the next email.

Oh…you do? Then maybe this will help.

Yesterday I met with a senior leader of a small company who was in a sticky situation. He was struggling with owners and peers who were opposed and scrambling for cover. Each person taking sides and protecting their turf. It is the type of situation that could cost you your job.

Then, in the middle of our conversation, God showed up. He showed up in a flat tire.

A man walked in the restaurant and asked if someone drove a Suburban. I do. He announced that I had a flat tire. I turned and looked through the window and I see two other men crouched in the 100 degree heat putting air in my flat tire! I walked outside and these three men, all part of a landscaping crew, had simply decided to fix my flat tire. I was amazed, feeling incredibly blessed as I quickly thought through the work they had just spared me.

But here is the cool part. I walked back into the restaurant and sat down with my friend who had been watching this whole thing play out…and he had tears in his eyes. He said, “that’s it. You just do the right thing and trust that God will work out the details.

It was profound. A simple solution to a very complex problem. The next time you feel caught up in the complexity of office politics, remember this leader’s words.

Father, give us the wisdom and the courage to do the right thing and trust that you will work out the details. Amen

Today is…

Don’t you love talking with a man or a woman who seems to have great wisdom? They are dropping these pearls on you and they don’t even know it.

Such was the case Wednesday morning with Springdale, AR Mayor Doug Sprouse. He spoke to a room full of “between jobs” men and women at The Joseph Project.

Doug shared several gems like “God’s wisdom can overcome any lack of experience.” And, “it’s never too late to go a different direction.”

But, this is the one that stopped most of us in our tracks. “Today is preparation for tomorrow. Don’t quit on it!” He spoke about how God has a plan for our lives and that even the mundane, nothing good happened today, negative day…is preparation for what He has planned for tomorrow.

This resonates especially strongly with those suffering between jobs, when days begin to run together with seemingly nothing positive happening. But it applies to every one of us, doesn’t it?

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.   1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Lord, we are TAKING BACK DECEMBER from the enemy! We are praying for 31 days to make our home and our work about Jesus, not “want-based” commercialism and busyness. Thank you for helping me see the power in … today is preparation for tomorrow. Don’t quit on it!”  Amen
