Archive for August, 2009

The hours and hours of preparation and prayer finally came together this past Wednesday, August 26th at John Brown University, Rogers Center with close to 60 people coming to the kickoff meeting of the new Joseph Project 2.0.   It was such a blessing to see this great turnout of old friends and many first timers.  A sincere THANKS to all who volunteered and who prayed for this new effort.

Butch Scruggs did a great job pulling all the details together and leading the effort to make this day go as well as it did.  Thanks Butch!

The Joseph Project 2.0 is a ministry of WorkMatters and is about “altering the journey of business people between jobs.”   The focus of 2.0 is  truly on preparing people as much as possible with practical job search skills provided by local marketplace professionals.    Our aim is to assist people by teaching how best to prepare people in the following job search skills:

  • 30 second elevator speech/2 minute commercial
  • Resume writing
  • Personal Presentation
  • Networking
  • Using internet job search tools
  • Interviewing
  • Offer and Acceptance

We will also offer extended sessions that will focus on meeting more specific interests.

If this is something you feel would be beneficial to you or someone you know, please come and check it out or invite someone you know.  There is no charge for this assistance and those that come have constantly commented on how meaningful it is both personally and professionally.

Here are a few pictures from the kickoff event.   Please join us.  You will be very glad you did.

WorkMatters Future

“Instead you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”   James 4:15

Tomorrow our WorkMatters Board of Directors will spend the day together at a Board Retreat. That’s marketing-speak for “we will sit in someone else’s conference room all day and contemplate the future.”

Seriously, I am very excited about this day. For five plus years, WorkMatters has had a burden to help men and women in the marketplace “bridge the gap between faith and work”. Tom Frase founded WorkMatters at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, AR. I joined the original Board, then after one year, left my VP, Sales/Marketing role at J.B. Hunt Transport to lead this ministry into the unknown. It has been an incredible journey.

Tomorrow, we will spend the entire day praying, thinking, talking and listening to the vision the Lord has for WorkMatters next five years! What is our burden now? What are the needs of men and women in the marketplace now and in the future? How can we help more people?

For sure, awareness and equipping men and women to live like Christ in the “four walls” of the workplace will be a priority. But how about the need to create and release more spiritual marketplace leaders commited to disciple others? What about the more strategic issue of how our work influences, either positively or negatively, our marriages. Or our parenting? What about the “ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8)?

I would be grateful if you would remember WorkMatters in your prayers tomorrow. That we would hear God’s “gentle whisper” (1Kings 19:12) for his workplace ministry WorkMatters.

We LOVE what we do. We believe “the market” for transforming lives by encouraging and equipping men and women to see Christ in their work is enormous. We humbly wait to see what He will have to say to us tomorrow.

For Him @ work,

David

YOUR Favorite Proverb?

As I said in my last post, we have received so many encouraging comments and stories of life impact from our WorkMatters 31 Days of Proverbs and Prayer in July. We have been encouraged over and over to continue in some form or fashion.

In the meantime, we wanted to give YOU a chance to Blog. Out of the 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs and hundreds of verses…which one is most meaningful to you???

Simply click on the Comments section below and share with everyone your verse(s). And share why it’s your favorite, as well.

By the way, mine is…

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.   Proverbs 3:5-6

My wife Theresa really turned me on to this verse years ago. She translates it…”let go, let God.”

Godspeed!

David

PRAY Pic-31 Days

What a blessing this 31 day journey has been! It began with “Knowledge or Wisdom?” and ended with “A Woman After God’s Own Heart”.

Proverbs has to be the most practical of all of the books in the Bible. It shows us how to become wise, make good decisions, and live a God-centered life. And then it covers about a billion other subjects, all of which we need help with in our daily living!

We have received so many encouraging comments. Here are just a few:

“Hey David, just want you to know how much I’ve enjoyed Proverbs this month. I’ve been away from my regular morning routine much of the month, so each of the daily devotionals have been fantastic, and have enable me to at least take a few minutes each morning with the Lord. Thanks for all you and WM does!!!”

“I really appreciate the 31 days. I can’t believe we’re at the end of the month and I’m sad to not have those to look forward to each morning.”

“A friend sent me this link on day one and it really had an impact on my success in reading the Proverbs each day.  I look forward to more daily bible guidance from you in the future.”

“I have really enjoyed your posts the last 29 days, however this one really goes right to the heart of things.”

“A perfect verse with perfect timing.  Although the need is not in regard to work, I have found comfort in my struggles of today when I read the verse from Proverbs.  I will walk with a lighter step today.”

“These have all been powerful but this one is especially timely!!!”

Make sure you Subscribe to the Blog (above right) and continue on this journey to bridge the gap between our faith and work. Also, follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/WorkMatters and on our Facebook Fan page at  www.facebook.com to connect, be encouraged and equipped.

Thanks for taking this journey with us. It has been a blessing for Sam Bates and I to share it with you.

Father, we started 31 days ago on a focused journey to read your word and pray. Thank you for granting us that privilege and for working powerfully in our lives through our obedience in the journey. May you give us the courage to walk out what we have read and prayed. Amen

David and Sam
