power-line-workerPlease join us in praying for all of the workers braving the cold, working in serious danger, and missing their families…all in an effort to SERVE others in this historic ice storm across northern Arkansas and other states, as well.

As I enter day four of no power, a yard full of downed trees, and sleepovers at caring friends homes, I have been guilty of wondering where the utility crews are, what is taking so long? All fair, but selfish questions.

The workers in the field, on the other hand, are asking very selfless questions, as they operate around the clock on very little sleep, working in subfreezing temperatures, literally risking their lives in some cases, all to SERVE us.

Here is a quote I received this morning from a friend who works at SWEPCO:

“I appreciate your prayers for safety for all of the people involved in this restoration effort and for the public, who don’t understand the hazards associated with downed power lines. Personally, I’m battling fatigue the last two nights with a couple of hours sleep. Tonight should be some better.”

These men and women are working with all of their hearts. Let’s pray for them.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”

Colossians 3:23

BIG Blessings (part 2)

Following up from yesterday, the group started gathering Friday afternoon and the festivities began.  We arrived early Friday evening and the laughter and catching up began in earnest.  Before we knew it the clock said it was 1:45am, WAY past some of our normal bedtimes.   So it was off to bed with all looking forward to a full day on Saturday.

As the weekend progressed and folks began finding time to talk and share individually, it started to emerge that we were all there to recover something that had been too long neglected.  It also struck me that at this point in our lives, we had come to realize what really mattered most.

Over these past twenty years we had all had professional success.  From being business owners, to upper level executives, we had experienced the successes of the business world.  However, it also became clear that we had all paid a very high price personally and seen how this success, with its status, perks and trappings could enslave you and then suddenly vanish like the illusion that it is.

We talked about how God seemed to want to get our attention and teach us some important lessons about what truly matters in life. We all had to spend some time in the desert, experiencing pain and loss to bring us to that place.  One of the lessons that we all learned was that our relationships are what truly sustain us.  First our relationship with Father God, then our relationship with our family, finally our relationship with our friends.

We talked about the blessings of our wives.  All of us had wives who were rock solid there for us during those hard times and who stood by us and believed in us when we were struggling to believe in ourselves.

I think we all realized that really its the people in our lives that matter most.  Through the pain we had all experienced, I think we  felt God telling us that our relationships must be attended to and that we would finally realize the incredible gift we had in these long and deep relationships of almost fifty years.

We were all blessed with the awareness that our relationships are what will endure.  We prayed and thanked God for teaching us this lesson and committed to not take this BIG blessing for granted ever again.

BIG Blessings!

There are times in our life when God provides us with blessings beyond our expectations.  Sometimes they are just small things that happen during the course of the day like when a meeting goes better than expected. How about when the traffic lights somehow are in sync seem to go green  for you just as you approach them…don’t ya love it when that happens?

Then there are the BIG blessings…the ones that rock your world and you can’t stop thinking about them and praising God.  I was blessed with one of those mountain top blessings this past weekend in the form of a gathering of old friends, most of which I had not seen in over ten years and a couple almost twenty.  These were my first friends from the elementary and junior high school years…the guys from my first home church back in St. Louis.

As we arrived throughout Friday evening and Saturday morning each greeting was so sweet.  Although we all had put on few lb’s or gone to the “gray” side, no one had changed all that much. We just started talking and it was comfortable and fun from the get go.  Felt kind of like the many times this exact group gathered at one of our houses years ago on Friday night for a wild and wooly overnight.  One of the guys reminded us that we were all together on the night of the first moon landing.

What was so amazing as well was that during the past three years or so all five of us has gone through a really hard work related loss.  All of us had been successful in our careers however,  to a man, we all had dealt with something very hard.  After a couple of phone conversations and realizing this, the felt need to get together was powerful and thankfully one of the guys had the perfect place for us to retreat.

I will talk more tomorrow about the lessons learned and what I took away from this most incredible weekend.

Blessings!

Being from St. Louis, I tend to lean toward liking any team of Cardinals that I happen to run across.  I must admit to being old enough to remember the only fun days when the football Cards were were half-way decent.  Anyone else remember Jim Hart to Mel Gray or the Cardiac Cards?  So even though they moved to Arizona, I still kind of secretly kept my eye on them and hoped they would someday have a good year.

So fast forward a few years and the Los Angeles Rams moved to St. Louis? How strange was that?  Anyway, some good times finally returned, led by the most unlikely of people that no one had ever heard of.  Kurt Warner, a former Arena football quarterback and grocery store stock clerk.  He was a man of faith though and become beloved in St. Louis, especially after leading the Rams to two Super Bowls and winning the league MVP twice, all the while thanking Jesus and giving God all the glory.

Now at 37, thought to be washed up and after some years in the desert (no pun intended) he is going back to the Super Bowl with the most unlikely of teams…..can anyone believe this…. the Arizona Cardinals!  Bet you thought you would never hear those words.

So watch this and see one tremendous example of  living out your faith at work.  This guy doesn’t  ever miss an opportunity.

Go Cards, and God Bless Kurt Warner.

I received a text message this morning that gave me the “holy goosers” as my friend Mark Seifert used to say. It said…”Did you see Jesus show up yesterday on the Hudson River?”

I sat stunned with tears in my eyes watching the Today Show this morning. Listening to the many accounts of heroism already streaming out. The pilot, the ferry boat driver, the leader sitting next to the mother with a 9 month old in her lap asking if he could embrace the baby for her as they landed, the woman saying I am a “born again Christian” and so I just prayed.

I can’t wait to hear all of the stories. Many will be stories of faith, servant leadership, discernment, wisdom. Praise God for his mighty works and may He use this event in powerful ways for His Kingdom.

The Hard Questions

…“the hard questions rarely get asked during the good times. They are just too easy to ignore, too easy to avoid, too easy to put off when things are going well. Unfortunately…it often takes a crisis or a period of great difficulty to face challenges and …most important…to change.”

This statement, made just yesterday, often describes our lives, our businesses and our relationship with Christ, doesn’t it?

The truth is, I omitted the first few words spoken yesterday by outgoing Walmart CEO Lee Scott to the National Retail Federation in New York City. The statement started with, “From what I have learned in business…and from what I have seen in Washington…”

But it still applies, not only in our businesses and jobs, but in our faith, as well.

Are you taking this opportunity to “ask the hard questions” in your job? More importantly, are you asking God to show you where and how you need to change?

“Take courage! It is I.”

Matthew 14:27

The boss came by again yesterday and asked me again if I was going to make my numbers for the the quarter.  More than ever, the pressure is on to turn the prospects into clients.  Our business is off this year and in this economy it has been so hard to make the sale.  I feel like I am being counted on the carry the entire division and honestly, I have never felt this stressed out.

As usual, I told him that everything looked good and that all these potential deals were coming together nicely….basically I lied and told him what he wanted to hear.  Inwardly,  I am a wreck wondering how I will make these deals work.  Seems like somehow things have always worked out, but that does not seem to be the case these days and I am scared.

Recently, a guy in the office a few doors down invited me to a group with a few other folks over lunch who are talking about the pressures of work and life.  He said its just a time for people to encourage each other and be able to share ideas, insights and process life and even pray together.  I had heard about groups like this starting to form at other companies, but honestly did not feel like it would ever happen here. I told him I would think about it.

Earlier today, our company was downgraded by Wall Street and everyone is freaking out.  The pressure just got turned up and it feels like we are almost to the breaking point.  Existing clients are now not returning  phone calls, so just holding on the business we have is a major challenge.  I am finding myself considering things that would be dishonest and against my ethics in order to make my numbers and save my job.   Wonder if this group could provide me a place to release some steam and get some different perspectives on all this?  I am so tired of the pressure and need someone to talk to who understands.  It meets again today at lunch….I think I will check it out.

Please consider either starting our joining a Workplace Group.  There are people who are in desperate need of having a place to process the pressure of the workplace, especially in times like these.

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man.  And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up to it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

Thank You!

Friends of WorkMatters,

Welcome to 2009! I know you are very focused on getting off to a positive start after such a family-focused set of holidays, so I will get straight to the point.

THANK YOU!

On October 15, WorkMatters announced our $35,000 Matching Gifts Challenge. That meant that for every dollar you gave, we had raised pledges to match it up to $35,000.

In the middle of this difficult, unpredictable economy… you gave! You made a statement about the importance of this mission to bridge the gap between faith and work!

In 75 days, you invested $52,325 in WorkMatters!

After collecting the $35,000 in pledges from our other supporters, we completed the Challenge with a total of $87,325! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Thank you for your incredible response. Thank you for your prayers and encouragement. And thank you for your investments!

2008 was an incredible year in WorkMatters. We hope your life was transformed in some way as you participated in this faith and work journey.

Let me close with a powerful scripture that has been my fundraising prayer, but applies directly to our lives, as well:

“Keep falsehood and lies far from me; GIVE ME NEITHER POVERTY NOR RICHES, BUT GIVE ME ONLY MY DAILY BREAD. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the LORD ?’  Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.”

Proverbs 30:8-9

To God be the glory,

David Roth

President, WorkMatters
